The reports of the demise of Herman Cain's Federal Reserve nomination hopes were apparently premature, at least as far as Trump adviser Larry Kudlow is concerned.
At any rate, Trump isn't going to make the call. "At the end of the day, it will probably be up to Herman Cain if he wants to stay in that process or not," Kudlow told reporters Tuesday. "As far as we are concerned he is still in the process and it is proceeding." However, Kudlow also said, "We are talking to a number of candidates" as possible substitute nominees for Cain and Stephen Moore, the other questionable Fed hopeful. "We always do." Both nominees, but particularly Cain, face a confirmation challenge among even Republicans in Mitch McConnell's Senate.
So the White House is standing by Cain, with all his baggage, including sexual harassment allegations, and Moore, with all his ineptitude. The official line from the administration is that Trump wants to wait until the FBI does background checks before making a final decision on moving the nominations forward. Meaning Trump is standing by them, because hell, what's a little sexual harassment and lack of qualifications to stand in the way? It hasn't held Trump back.
