Donald Trump may be headed to the city that’s the target of his latest racist attacks.
House Republicans are planning a retreat in Baltimore in September, and it’s customary for presidents to speak at such events. But Trump spent Sunday attacking Baltimore because it’s the home of Rep. Elijah Cummings, chair of the House Oversight Committee and as such a thorn in the side of Trump, who is adamantly opposed to any oversight ever.
Trump called Cummings' district “a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess” as part of one of his typical racist attacks on a political opponent who draws his additional ire by being a person of color.
So what will happen when House Republicans head to Baltimore in September? That’s assuming they do, of course—one possibility for today’s Republican Party is that they’ll call off the retreat out of loyalty to their dear leader. Beyond that, Trump may take comfort in the fact that the retreat hotel is a few blocks outside of Cummings’ district, or he may count on this having faded from memory because it’s four to six racist temper tantrums in the past. If he goes, of course, he may find that local residents have longer memories.
