After weeks of attacking non-white critics on whatever thin charges his brain could dredge up, Donald Trump gave a speech in Jamestown, Virginia, ostensibly celebrating the 400th anniversary of democracy on the American continent. It is also the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first slaves brought to those early colonies.
It did not go well. Prior to the speech, the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus issued a statement that its members would be boycotting his appearance, and that they could not "in good conscience sit silently" while the odious racist fartbag is given a platform to hold forth on "democracy" in the midst of his repeated attacks on black lawmakers and communities. (I am paraphrasing, but only just.)
But the boycott was not the only response to Trump’s inappropriate presence. During his speech, one Virginia lawmaker let Trump know what he thought to Trump's face. ”You can't send us back, Virginia is our home!” shouted Virginia State Delegate Ibraheem Samirah repeatedly. Samirah, who is the Muslim son of Palestinian refugees, defended his act in a blistering Twitter thread and official statement, saying "It was my duty" to call out Trump's "hypocritical and bigoted" attacks.
None of this appeared to faze Trump-loyal Republicans, who booed and attempted to drown out Samirah, in the speech honoring democracy, with unironically authoritarian chants of "Trump!" (This would seem literally to be the worst possible thing to chant during a celebration of representative, rather than executive, government, but there you are. For many years the Republican chants intended to silence protesters were usually "USA!" rather than Dear Leader-inspired, but that ship has sailed. And is leaking fuel. And is on fire.)
As for Trump, he will likely fume for days or weeks over this, especially once he learns the identity of the chanter. He fumes over opposition in any circumstances, but being challenged by a Muslim of Palestinian descent will, once it becomes fodder for the Fox News white nationalist programs, not be something the Republican bigot-in-chief will let slide.
