The special election for North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District, the redo of an election Republicans stole last November, is fast approaching—it’s on Sept. 10. As it approaches, the fret level of Republicans is skyrocketing.
They are in a panic to stave off what would be an incredibly embarrassing loss for them, not to mention a portent of doom for 2020. Here's how panicked they are: "With private polling showing a close race between [state Sen. Dan] Bishop and Democrat Dan McCready, Trump will travel to the district on Sept. 9, the night before the special election, for a rally in Fayetteville, N.C. And the White House is also planning to deploy Vice President Mike Pence and the president's son, Donald Trump Jr., before the election."
Bishop is a far-right extremist who has likened his efforts to police the public restrooms of North Carolina to the work of Oskar Schindler, the German industrialist who rescued Jews from Hitler's Holocaust. Which makes him a pretty typical Republican these days, certainly one that Trump and the entire team are ready to champion.
The good news, looking ahead to 2020, is that the Republican National Committee, the National Republican Campaign Committee, Rep. Kevin McCarthy's Congressional Leadership Fund Super PAC, and the Club for Growth have poured millions into the race—$6 million among all the groups. They're having to spend that much in a district Trump won by 11 points. If they're spending like this in a district that red, they're worried. The other interesting bit is how much they're making this a referendum on Trump. Even Bishop's campaign says so. "This race is about Donald Trump,” said Jim Blaine, a senior adviser to Bishop's campaign. "Dan's embraced Trump 100 percent."
Which would make it even more of a coup for Dan McCready and Democrats to pull off a win. Right now, early voting is strong for McCready. As of Monday, 54% of early votes were cast by Democrats, to 41% by Republicans. Republicans want this to be a referendum on Trump, particularly with those suburban voters who have them so scared? They're getting it.
Give now to win the do-over of the race Republicans tried to steal! You can also volunteer to help GOTV either on the ground or virtually to get McCready over the finish line. And to keep Trump and Republicans running scared.
