The career carnage in the Trump administration continues to mount. This time it’s national security adviser John Bolton who’s gotten the axe, and Trump made it very clear that he was not leaving on good terms.
Bolton and Trump had been at odds over, seemingly, most of Trump’s ramshackle foreign policy policies, and the relationship between Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had reportedly degraded to the point where the two were no longer on speaking terms.
Curiously—very curiously—Trump claims that Bolton was fired last night. But only an hour ago, Bolton was expected to appear in a 1:30pm press briefing at the White House. Unless they’re wheeling out a cake for him, that could be an interesting story. Bolton already took to Twitter to claim Trump did not fire him last night, but wanted to “talk about it tomorrow.”
Who will replace Bolton as Trump’s supposed top “national security adviser”? It’s difficult to say. Bolton is the fourth to be ejected from the position: The first person to take the job, Mike Flynn, is now waiting to hear if he’ll face jail time.
