No matter which poll you look at, Donald Trump is on a decidedly downward trajectory, notes NBC News. The Fox News poll that showed Trump's overall approvals at 49% in April and 48% in March now puts him at 44%. And remember, the thing to look for in any given poll on approvals is the trend line. Fox started out on the high end of approvals and has now come more in line with other polling.
The same is true for the ABC News/Ipsos poll, which was also released in the last 24 hours. Trump's approvals for his pandemic response hit an all-time low since it began tracking in March—39%. Ya love to see it.
Trump's pandemic rating also made a significant drop in the Fox poll, from 51% in March/April to 43% now. Just compare that Dr. Anthony Fauci, for instance, who has a coronavirus approval rating of 74%. Apparently telling people to drink bleach and take a malaria drug that has led to increased mortality rates in coronavirus patients isn't as popular as Trump expected.
In the Fox poll, Biden is now besting Trump by 8 points in the national head-to-head after the two were tied in April (talk about downward movement!). But the overall horse race at the moment isn't necessarily what's most troubling for Trump. Here are a few other data points:
- Just 20% say the economy is excellent/good while 49% say it's poor
- As Trump tries to tear down Barack Obama, voters in battleground states have a favorable view of Obama by nearly a two-to-one margin: 64% favorable versus 35% unfavorable (Trump's at 42% favorable/55% unfavorable in battlegrounds)
- Trump is absolutely sucking wind with the suburban women who helped deliver the House to Democrats in 2018 at 33% favorable/66% unfavorable; Biden is widely popular among the demographic, with 57% favorable/39% unfavorable
