After earlier naming her in a list of “wonderful lawyers and representatives” on President Donald Trump’s legal team, the Trump campaign is distancing itself from attorney Sidney Powell after she’s made multiple factually void statements publicly about the election. (Not unlike the president or his personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, I might add.) Only Powell is a woman defending an administration with a sexist wanna-be dictator at the helm.
For goodness sake, Trump just tweeted more election-rigging nonsense early Monday morning. “In certain swing states, there were more votes than people who voted, and in big numbers. Does that not really matter? Stopping Poll Watchers, voting for unsuspecting people, fake ballots and so much more. Such egregious conduct. We will win!” the president tweeted. The tweet was, of course, flagged as “disputed,” like many of Trump’s tweets as of late.
Still, the Trump campaign released this statement to the media Sunday: "Sidney Powell is practicing law on her own. She is not a member of the Trump Legal Team. She is also not a lawyer for the President in his personal capacity.
“- Rudy Giuliani, Attorney for President Trump, and Jenna Ellis, Trump Campaign Senior Legal Adviser and Attorney for President Trump"
Don’t get me wrong—Powell has been flying off the handle for a while now. She alleged widespread voter fraud during a press conference for the campaign Thursday and claimed an "algorithm" switched votes from Trump to Biden, both allegations that didn't survive a Washington Post fact check. “What we are really dealing with here and uncovering more by the day is the massive influence of communist money through Venezuela, Cuba and likely China and the interference with our elections here in the United States,” Powell said, with no actual evidence to support her claims.
In another statement, she alleged: “The Dominion voting systems, the Smartmatic technology software and the software that goes in other computerized coding systems here as well, not just Dominion, were created in Venezuela at the direction of (late president) Hugo Chávez.”
Yes, it’s bad, and it got worse. But in the very same article, the Post quotes Giuliani saying: “Joe Biden told us a few days before the election that he had the best voter fraud team in the world.” In fact, Biden did not. An edited video that the president’s son, Eric Trump, floated was blocked on Facebook and labeled “misleading” on Twitter. Now, the president is hardly taking any steps to distance himself from his problematic son or the other professional liars surrounding the Trump administration. The reality star is even pushing the lies himself, but somehow, Powell is the only problem.
The sexism really should come as no surprise. Let’s not forget the president got into office calling former Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton a “nasty woman.” The attacks on women since then have been almost too numerous and frequent to list, from Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who the president called “Gretchen ‘Half’ Whitmer” and said "she doesn't have a clue" to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who Trump called a "sick puppy," according to The New York Times. Trump is no friend to women. Powell is just the latest scapegoat. Only I can’t exactly muster up any sympathy for her, considering she’s a liar.
