The trial of the second person charged by German authorities as an accomplice of the September 11 hijackers was thrown into turmoil when prosecutors revealed there was a surprise witness purporting to link Iran to the hijackings.
The shock came on the eve of what many expected would be the acquittal of former Moroccan student Abdelghani Mzoudi, 31.
The witness, Hamid Reza Zakeri, claims to have been a longtime member of the Iranian intelligence service.
Mr Zakeri is said to have told German investigators that the September 11 plot was a joint venture between al-Qaeda and the Iranian Government.
