This has been on my mind for awhile, but I let it pass because 1) obviously, the Clinton scandal was deserving of satire and 2) though I disagree, I could see why they gave Bush a bit of a free pass in the months after 9/11.
However, I am now convinced Lorne Michels has either completely sold out or there is more censorship (either self or network) than ever on the show. We now have the site of weekend update (with avowed Bush hater Tina Fey) only doing 1-2 Bush jokes (completely lame in comparison with what the Daily Show does). And the skits are almost right-wing in nature.
The case in point: last year, the new guy doing Bush ended his address to the nation saying "and I won't let you down".... HUH? It wasn't funny- it was clearly a pro-Bush editorial inserted in the skit.
I know head-writer Jim Downey is a Republican, but I can't bear to watch. And to think, this is the show that had Jon Lovitz as Dukakis saying during a debate "I can't believe I'm losing to this guy" to wild cheers from the New York audience.
