I'm here to talk about the DRAFT.
We all heard the squeaks recently as the draft boards got oiled again by the Pentagon, but it wasn't a major public story. However... i was talking to a friend about it over lunch, and he thinks it will take 12-13 months from reinstating the draft to actually getting draftees onto the front lines. Now, if we're stuck in a long-term occupation of Iraq (or bonus invasions of Syria/Iran/NK/Libya/France/Mars), the supply of both enlisted and reservists could dry up before draftees could come online. This would be a disaster for occupation.
This means that to pursue the PNAC dream of empire, Bush may need to start the draft BEFORE the election, if he wants new troops before 2006. The alternative could be a disaster - dwindling occupation forces in the face of hundreds of casualties a month. Withdraw in humiliation and let Saddam return to power?
On the other hand, if he starts up the draft to maintain occupation of Iraq, or invade someone else... will he stand a chance of getting elected in November?
