It occurred to me reading JeffinMA's diary entry of a unique way to protest from the ground up in response to Bush's proposal of an Amendment to the Constitution to say that marriage is only to be between a man and a woman. Easong responded that he had delayed marraige for many years on those grounds.
What if single heterosexuals refused to marry until the right was granted to all Americans? The culture at large would freak out because they would fear a destabilization of society. If even 20 or 30% of especially young people would give that reason to their families and friends it would create a huge ripple effect. Studies show the age factor is the strongest in gay acceptance, the younger the person polled the more accepting they were of gay people.
Barney Frank said yesterday on CNN that the proposed amendment would not come up for vote until 2006 which would give this idea a few years to gain steam. The explanation of not marrying if this Amendment is passed could prove incredibly helpful gaining rights for fellow citizens. Couples who have children could protect themselves with legal agreements privately in the meantime. Even single people when asked by grandma when they might be getting married would have a very interesting response.
