Well, I can't say I got a lot out of Gep's on-line chat in the Washington Post. But there were a few things that jumped out at me:
Rep. Richard A Gephardt : I do support safe genetically modified food. It holds the promise of doing away with pesticides and dangerous substances in the production of food. But we must determine that genetically modified food is safe for human consumption.
Rep. Richard A Gephardt : The WTO must begin to recognize better standards for labor, human rights and environmental concerns. When I am president I will ask the WTO to enact an international minimum wage. It will be different in different countries, but we must begin to get international standards for labor and environment.
Rep. Richard A Gephardt : I voted for [the Patriot Act], but I do believe that this Attorney General, John Ashcroft, is not administering it in a balanced way. I support some of the changes in the act that have been proposed by various members of Congress. I believe these changes may be helpful.
Rep. Richard A Gephardt : I favor the retention of the words "under God." In the House of Representatives we have the words over the Speakers desk "In God We Trust." I think that is an appropriate reference in our Pledge of Allegiance.
Rep. Richard A Gephardt : I hope to elect a Democratic Congress when I win the presidency. If that does not happen, I believe I have the ability to convince some Republicans to lay aside the Bush tax cuts in order to get everyone covered with health insurance that can never be taken away.
Rep. Richard A Gephardt : My education program is designed to really help local schools do better. I am for more preschool programs, after school programs, smaller classroom size programs and I have a new idea called teacher core which will be like ROTC for teachers. My belief is that vouchers take needed funds away from public schools and therefore I have opposed them.
Rep. Richard A Gephardt : I am for trade and I am for trade treaties that increase trade. I am against protectionism but I am also for training and retraining workers that loose their jobs in other countries. I am especially for using trade treaties to increase standards in other countries for workers and the environment. My trade position is often misunderstood. I voted for the World Trade Organization and I voted for trade treaties that can increase and enforce standards in other countries for labor and environment.
So what do you think? These were the ones that jumped out at me. The poll is so that folks can vote the ones they most disagree with (or they that they think he is wrong to push). I thought about doing it the other way around but I'm in a critical mood I guess.
