All this talk about Gibson's movie (which I don't intend to see) and accusations of anti-Semitism has left me confused. If I understand correctly, the idea is that the film appears to support the idea that Jews were somehow responsible for the crucifixion.
It would appear that researchers at the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press are interested in this 2000 year old news story and have determined that an increasing number of people hold this to be true. Look here in this AP stroy via Drudge.
Now I am no biblical scholar, in fact, I am an atheist, however, I spent 8 years in a Catholic school and if I remember correctly, the idea was that Jesus was supposed to get killed no matter what. That was the whole idea behind martyrdom, dying for our sins, and so forth. In other words, the principle motivator of his death was not any human being or group of humans, but rather, the "blame" rests squarely on the shoulders of God and that the mechanism by which he was killed is merely incidental.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
