This diary entry has nothing to do with politics. This is just to reflect on being snowed in for three days.
On Monday night a blizzard moved in over the Pacific Northwest and covered virtually the entire area with about six inches of snow.
In Chicago, where I grew up, this would be enough to close the schools for, maybe, one day. The salt trucks would go out in force and clear up the roads, making everything functional for the next day.
Here in Oregon, they don't use salt for environmental reasons, and so the entire city shuts down until things thaw out. The results of this strategy are now clear to everyone in Portland, as the entire East side is covered with thick, smooth ice. I now live in big hockey rink with buildings built on it.
I'm going a little stir-crazy.
Fortunately I have plenty of food, warm clothes, heat, electricity, DSL and a sympathetic boss.
