At my office on Friday, when I was feeling extremely depressed, I received a ray of sunlight.
I'm in Texas, so maybe none of this matters. However, at my office tensions are running high. About 7 of us -- focused in "Commie Corner" where I sit -- are ultra-hard-core Kerry supporters. We are matched by "The right wing hall" of 5 people, with their Vote Bush signs up. The rest of the office is quietly pro-Kerry.
Anyway, on Friday, one of the Bush signs came down.
When I asked the former Bush signholder why, she said something that shocked me:
"I'm voting Kerry," said this 28-year old professional woman, "even though I've been a life-long republican. I'm anti-abortion. I'm pro Tax cut. And I don't care. I'm still voting for Kerry because George Bush got us into a stupid war, and now he's going to draft people to go fight it. And I'll tell you something else: My mother, who is a deacon in the church, is going to vote for Kerry because she doesn't want my brother to die. End of story."
The woman who told me this is an evangelical christian and far, far, far to the right; her mother is somewhere around Coulter in her politics. These are Texas people, born and bred -- white, rich, and protestant. And Bush has lost their vote.
If Bush is having trouble carrying the Texans, then Bush is having seious trouble all around the country.
