I was thinking this morning how much the Red Sox win could mean politically. The latest Bush strategy has been to attack Kerry as the "Massachusetts Liberal ", or "what do you expect for a Massachusetts Liberal ". Bush has been trying to characterize the entire state as some land foreign to the values of regular Americas.
Now come the Red Sox. The ultimate underdogs who have just slain the "evil empire" (hey I don't think that though, I'm a Yankees fan!). I bet a lot of people in the country will be rooting for the Sox. It gives Massachusetts a national identity beyond "the home of liberal senators". Sports will help humanize these "crazy New Englanders" to the rest of the country. I don't think Bush can attack Massachusetts anymore on the stump, thus killing another line of attack. That pretty much leaves him with nothing to say.
