Okay, it's been a week since Bush was re-elected and I'm still relatively calm. All my friends are actually surprised. They thought I'd be planning my move to Canada or shooting up some red states. Then I came to realize the reason I am not so emotional. That's because my true candidate lost months ago. When Dean dropped out, for me, my heart was no longer in this election.
Sure I was going through the motions. I was registering people, calling voters in OH and jumping on a last-minute bus to Vegas. But really, the things I had been hoping for in this election including a strong Democratic party with a clear message, a party that was forward thinking and inclusive, a party that wanted to fight for all 50 states (including those with Confederate flags) had already lost.
I think it may be too late for a Dean Presidency. But let's hope that in 2008 the Democratic party gives all us of dreamers, volunteers, party faithfuls and regular Americans someone with a message who can inspire us, someone who can draw us to the table, someone who can make us feel great about our party and our country, in short, someone like Howard Dean.
