I'm just back from downtown Boston. There were so many volunteers at Kerry HQ that they were just sending people out to do visibility and hand out stickers and balloons.
Over by Faneuil Hall there was a huge crowd. Hundreds of people were standing quietly and looking at the Union Oyster House, which is the oldest restaurant in America, and has great clam chowder.
As it turns out, Kerry, who is quite superstitious, has a tradition of eating lunch there every election day. Soon his motorcade pulled up and he and Teresa waved and went into the restaurant. The crowd stayed. Teresa left early, and about an hour later John emerged, looking happy and relaxed. He shook some hands and waved from SUV's sunroof (the area had been carefully swept by police with dogs and the Secret Service.)
This is unusual behavior for Bostonians, who tend to be very live-and-let-live about our local celebs. Boston's very nervous, proud, and excited.
