Talking about 9/11. Gulliani's speech that day, and how excellent he was. And how for the next few days he was the unofficial leader of this country. But Gulliani's speech was significant because he was saying "Don't be afraid. I'm standing here, lucky to be alive, with the biggest nightmare come to life behind me. I've seen it take my good friends, and there are a lot of good people dead. But we aren't afraid and we aren't frightened. We aren't going to tolerate people taking the law into their own hands. And if I'm here in NY, and I'm not afraid, then none of you out there, where ever you are, should be afraid."
Jump ahead two and a half years to Bush's State of the Union address. He says: "Be afraid. For those of you who think the war has been won, and that things are back to normal, and that we are safe at home, your wrong."
(Pardon my poor ability to remember the exact quotes.)
So Bush is banking his reelection on reminding us to be afraid. I just don't think spending alot of money of this message is a winner. But I have often overestimated the American public.
