Go and ahead and laugh if you must. But I know now we were destined to lose.
In their classic song "Amie," Pure Prairie League clearly predicted this election decades ago.
See, the Democratic Party is singing the song. Amie are the voters who should flock to us, but don't...rural working poor, middle class Hispanics, etc.
I'm serious about this. More below the fold.
See, look how the song starts out...
I can see why you think you belong to me
I never tried to make you think or make you see one thing for yourself
This is our big failing as a party. For years, we've never given these groups reasons to vote for us other than vague noises about Republicans being rich fatcats who hate them. (Which is true, but it isn't nearly enough.)
But now you're off with someone else and I'm alone
You see I thought I might keep you for my own
They're flocking to Republicans in increasing numbers and we want to keep them. That's obvious.
Amy, what you wanna do
I think I could stay with you
For a while maybe longer if I do
This is us pleading and begging them not to go.
Don't you think the time was right for us to find
All the things we thought weren't proper could be in time
This is clearly talking about the gay marriage issue.
Gay marriage isn't proper to many of the folks we should be appealing to. We need to make them see it's inevitable. It's progress. It will be considered proper one day.
Actually, we need to make them realize why gay marriage really shouldn't matter to them at all.
And can't you see which way we should turn together or alone
I can never see what's right or what is wrong
The curse of the Democrat. We can never "see what's right or what is wrong." Flip-floppers! This is borderline Nostradamus stuff, folks. This band predicted how John Kerry would be painted.
Simple correction: We must define ourselves as decisive in the future, as many have said.
Now just come to what you want you've had your way
And all the things you thought before just faded into gray
And you can say that I don't know if it's you or if it's me
If it's one of us I'm sure we both will see
Won't you look at me and tell me
I'm encouraged by this part of the prophecy..err..song. They've strayed now long enough, and it's time to bring them back into the fold. They're ready. They've had their way for now.
Is it us or is it them? We have to figure that out!
