We all know that Republicans espouse values that Democrats actually practice. For example, opposing a pre-emptive war against an enemy who poses no threat to our country is the real pro-life stance, not terrorizing young women struggling with the incredibly difficult and personal decision to have an abortion. So, how do we take back the moral leadership in America, both in language and action?
I suggest we take a page out of the Republican playbook and create a new Contract for America, this one for good and not for evil. We bill it as a non-partisan pledge, designed by a broad coalition of Americans eager to heal a divided country. We set up an online petition that people can sign which urges all members of Congress to agree to the new contract.
I don't have the language on the new contract down yet, but we want it to to be vague enough to sound reasonable but specific enough that we can invoke it whenever we are trying to either pass legislation we favor or block legislation we are against. We also want the language to be something that red staters would not only accept but would actually agree with strongly. For example, what repub wouldn't love a promise from Congress to minimize government intervention in the lives of Americans? Then, when the frickin constitutional amendment to ban same sex marriage comes up, we remind legislators of the new contract for america they signed. We should also include a statement of fiscal responsiblity we could use to stop the flood of tax money from blue states going to the red states.
We'd need some creative writers who could come up with the language for the provisions of the contract. Any volunteers?
