Obviously the blue state/Canada reallignment speculation is mainly a fantasy and a way to dream. But my Canadian progressive friends are not amused, and react with eyerolls about how little liberal/progressive/Dem Americans know about their great country. They want none of this talk.
Canada is a very fragile confederation - its becoming a country in 1867 was specifically related to the end of our Civil War, and British fear that with its end an expansionist Union would next set its sights north. A transcontinental railroad to join the loose collection of towns together was finished. Ever since they have looked south warily, and kept ties to the UK in order to safeguard their independence. Its the main reason the Queen is still their head of state.
Any tinkering with the present Canada would cause its collapse. Quebec and the Francophone population is now about a third of the country - they would never be part of a new country in which they would be a much smaller minority. In their absense, there would be no geographic connection between the east and west coasts.
The heartland provinces -- Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and particularly Alberta, as well as non-Vancouver British Columbia, are far more red state than blue state (although all have progressive quarters). They would want no part of us.
Ontario is the dominant force in present Canadian federal politics, and they like it that way. They would be a blip in the new country.
Canadian provinces are far more powerful that US states - the federal government has more limited functions.
No matter what collection of combined states/provinces would result, there is no way that in terms of population the Canadian part would not be overwhelmed by a section of the US. Though the more progressive states are more like Canada than the red states, at the end of the day, we are two distinct peoples, with different attitudes, traditions, laws. The present Canada does not want to be swallowed up by us.
Mainly I post this because Canadians are too damned polite to point out their frustrations at the lack of knowledge of how their society works. But trust me, they are not happy that US progressives are as likely to not be sensitive to their unique qualities any more than our conservatives.
