apparently the computers lost some votes in north carolina this time around.
quick summary.
the article says that they would not have made a difference in any of the races (which i find kind of hard to believe - 4500 is a lot of votes for a local race).
the machines were supposed to hold up to 10000 votes but they really only held 3005 votes.
the votes that were lost were EARLY votes.

people have been posting here about how early votes should have favored kerry, but they seem to have not helped in the final tallies. maybe this sort of thing was happening all over the country?
i don't think kerry can win NC even with this debacle but if these machines are in use in OH and FL, it could make a huge difference. there were postings in another diary about how florida vote totals didn't add up. maybe this is why.
oh and these were unilect machines apparently (not diebold) and the votes are lost forever.
