Just after the election I was feeling concerned when I started hearing political commentary about "Red states" and "Blue states" and how they were so different and couldn't understand each other. I was keenly aware that most states were not all red or all blue and there were very many that were split pretty evenly between Kerry and Bush, just that Bush had, in many cases, a slight majority.
I was inspired (on Thursday night (11/04/04)) to create a graphic of the U.S. with the states colored various shades of purple based on the percentages of Kery or Bush votes. I've seen other versions of the idea but none that show where all the states (and D.C.) fall on the spectrum, emphasizing how they are all clustered around the center.
