Mark Racicot, RNC chair and Bush04 bigwig, is being considered for a number of jobs, including Attorney General. Coming from Montana, where the Republican party has ties to right-wing and christian dominionist militias, he is the last person we want in any high ofice.
This is the man who stood by while someone made a public, and quite illegal, threat against a sitting president.
From the WSWS
On October 9, 1998 Racicot attended a Republican fundraiser and candidates' forum in Bozeman, Montana, where Bob Davies, a candidate for the state legislature, declared that President Clinton "should be shot." Davies said he routinely uttered that sentiment in response to voters who asked about his stand on the impeachment controversy.
More after the jump...
Davies also told the forum that Clinton was guilty of treason and should be executed for selling satellite technology to the Chinese government, likening the president to Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were electrocuted as Soviet spies at the height of the 1950s McCarthyite witch-hunt.
Neither Racicot nor any of the other Republican officials at the forum interrupted Davies, opposed his threats against the president, or reported Davies' comments to law enforcement agencies, even though advocating attacks against the president is a federal crime. Davies' comments only came to light two days later when one of those in attendance at the meeting wrote a letter to a local newspaper, declaring, "I am filled with disgust when I hear someone like Bob Davies who is running for public office advocate violence against other public officials."
The Montana milieu that gave birth to Racicot includes gems like Davies, and more.
From the Montana Human Rights Network
Rep. Aubyn Curtiss (R-Fortine)...
"Rep. Curtiss has consistently promoted ideas common to militia and freemen groups. In 1995, she circulated a petition asking Governor Racicot to grant amnesty to patriots to travel to an official forum where they could air their grievances against the government. John Trochmann, founder of the Militia of Montana, produced a copy of this petition during the 1996 Montana Freemen standoff as proof the patriots had legislative support. Curtiss has also asked the government to place distinguishing marks on its helicopters, saying mysterious black helicopters were a concern of her constituents."
Rep. Verdell Jackson (R- Kalispell)...
"In May 2000, he testified against offering health benefits to same-sex partners in the Montana University System. Jackson claimed it was part of an immoral gay agenda. He is president of a Christian-Right public policy group, Montana Matters."
Sen. Jack Wells (R-Bozeman)...
"Sen. Wells signed Curtiss' militia petition and has attended at least one militia meeting in Bozeman. He said he needed to be in touch with his constituents and "supporters." In 1995, he co-sponsored a resolution urging Montanans to arm themselves for service in the militia."
These are the people that Racicot served with. And I'm not gonna mention this strangely-sourced drugrunning rumor AT ALL. =)
