Good news out of Pennsylvania, folks, it sounds like Bob Casey Jr., the incoming state treasurer, may be at least thinking about running against Rick Santorum.
He's also being heavily courted by the DSCC and Harry Reid to run for the seat.
Casey received a call Wednesday from New York Sen. Charles E. Schumer, chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, who encouraged him to run. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada did the same two weeks ago.
Casey, 44, said he is "open to any suggestion" but remains focused on finishing his second term as state auditor general and being sworn in next month as treasurer. His goal is to be governor someday, but he appears to be taking the Senate idea seriously, discussing a bid with supporters and family.
Casey got more votes than did any candidate EVER in Pennsylvania's history. He'd be able to peel off a ton of Republican swing voters across the state and would probably end up crushing Santorum like an empty beer can.
He's only thinking of running because he sounds very afraid for the state of the Democratic Party in Pennsylvania.
While deciding how to spend his political capital, Casey has begun talking bluntly about the health of his party and the need, as he sees it, to appeal beyond the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh areas.
"There is a 40-year gradual, sometimes dramatic, slide that our party has to deal with," he said of national Democrats.
Kerry carried 13 counties in Pennsylvania, down from 27 for the party's nominee in 1992. Bush won seven of 12 Western counties where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans.
"For the Democratic Party," Casey said, "that is unacceptable."
Casey sounds like a guy who is willing to put the party before himself and his gubanatorial ambitions. That sounds exactly like the opposite of right-wing Rickie, and that's the type of candidate I want running against him.
While he may be pro-life and pro-gun, Casey is absolutely against the bullshit and cant that the Republicans spout off so often.
He'd be tearing the Republicans a new one over the proposed privitization of Social Security. He's with us on economic issues and social justice issues, and right now that's the only thing that matters in the Congress. He's at least consistant when it comes to upholding the value of life, as he opposes the death penalty.
If you're worried about having a pro-choice Democratic Senator, ask yourself the following: Do you really thik the Republicans are actually going to ever address their hot button issues? I don't. Because without these wedge issues, they can't win jack. You actually think they're gonna start running on their economic record? Hah! When heck freezes over maybe.
