Poor Pooh. He along with his friends Barney, Bob the Builder, Clifford the Big Red Dog, the Rugrats, the gang from Sesame Street and many others are the latest threat to society which must be stamped out by the Religious Right. More than 100 classic and loved children's characters "united" to record "We Are Family," a music video promoting family and togetherness.
They must be stopped, says the Radical Right. I wish I was kidding, but I am not making this up. Big Bird is now part of the "homosexual agenda." The evil Pooh and his friends support tolerance, having the nerve to suggest we have respect for people whose abilities, beliefs, cultures and so on are different from our own. That means, shockingly, we should even respect those whose "sexual identities" are different from our own, and most good Radicals know these people should not be treated with respect. Oh, Jesus would be proud.
Ironically, one of the Radical Right's own, American Family Association chairman Don Wildmon, gets it:
"If you are a person who accepts the homosexual lifestyle, then you are tolerant," he said. "If you don't, then you are a bigot who is motivated by ignorance and hate."
Not exactly, but close enough.
I can just imagine a good Radical tucking his little boy into bed at night. "Sorry, Jimmy, I can't read you the Pooh bedtime story anymore because he might make you gay."
