Ok, I know we here on DailyKos sometimes get accused of living in an echo chamber which may or may not skew our perception of reality. While that may be true, it certainly isn't a trait exclusive to our side of the political spectrum. Every once in a while, to get my kicks, I'll drop into a conservative board or blog just to see what's on the other side's mind.
While reading a few posts on the gopusa.com forum this evening, I was struck by this particular gem, referring to the open seat Senate race this year in Oklahoma and GOP senate prospects in general (emphasis added):
Well, I don't know if the GOP can hold on to it's vacated Senate seats in Illinois, Oklahoma, and Alaska. I thought that Oklahoma is a safe Republican hold for this year's election and when I look at this poll, it puzzles me to wonder how on earth would a conservative state like Oklahoma be thinking about voting a Democrat in as a replacement for Senator Nickes seat. I guess it's too early to tell how this senate race goes over there. I'm not from Oklahoma, I just happen to browse the web one day and saw this poll and this either could make or break the GOP's majority in the senate. IF the Republicans loses Illinois, Oklahoma, and Alaska. Then it will be impossible to get a 60 seat majority goal for the Republicans avoid any future Democrat fillabusters and make it easier for Conservatives to get judicial nominations. All they [the GOP] need to do is win all of the 5 seats in the South and the 5 heated seats in South Dakota, Nevada, Wisconsin, Arkansas, and California and maintain Illinois, Alaska, and Oklahoma to get a 60 seat majority by this November's election.
Wow, just think, if the GOP can manage to win all six open Senate seats (in Illinois, Oklahoma, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana), defeat "vulnerable" incumbent Democrats in South Dakota (Daschle), Nevada (Reid), Wisconsin (Feingold), Arkansas (Lincoln), and California (Boxer) AND reelect all of their incumbents (including Campbell, Specter, Bunning, Bond, etc.) they will achieve the magical 60 seat super-majority they've been longing for! Talk about setting a real low goal here... I mean, I don't know about you, but I'm shakin' in my boots at that crackpot scenario.
As long as the GOP wingnuts believe this is an achievable goal, that reinforces my perception that we here on DailyKos are just a little more grounded in reality, despite the echo chamber. I mean, I don't have anything against bold, far reaching goals, but at some point it becomes destructive (i.e., spreading your resources too thin). Which is exactly why I hope they all genuinely believe this kind of crap.
Anyway, just hope the above was good enough to provide for a few laughs on a Sunday evening, if nothing else.
