... two nights ago. The nightmare was this:
A few days before the November election Al Quaeda will pull off a monumental attack on US soil. The attack might not be as large as 9/11, but the aftershocks (economic and political) will be as big or bigger. In the immediate aftermath, Vice President Dick Cheney will be the first person from the Administration to speak before the news media. In the midst of a plea for calm he will announce that the elections will be postponed for a short time. Cheney, even before the attack understanding that the administration was heading for defeat, will grab this chance to hold onto power. Bush will defer to Cheney and go along with this coup. The congress will be hugely divided with the leadership in the House and Senate backing Cheney with a small, but powerful minority. The majority in Congress will be incensed and demand that the elections proceed. The Supremes will formally keep out of it, but Scalia and Thomas will give quotes to the media backing Cheney. The media will be in a frenzy.
I don't know how it ends as I woke up (thank god) shortly after.
I haven't been able to shake this nightmare from my mind and now seeing what has happened in Spain ... I really can see this happening. I can see Al Quaeda doing this deliberately and I can see Cheney grabbing at it with relish. We are so polarized I can see the wingnuts supporting Cheney in a coup.
