I was just listening to a woman from
CalVoter.org on to KPFA. She told Pacifica listeners about some of the early reports about voting problems on the March 2nd California primary. One in particular caught my attention:
Some districts in Orange County - identified as those using Diebold machines - only give primary voters the option of voting in the Democratic primary.
Forgive me for being suspicious of the partisan Diebold and the scorched-earth federal GOP. This particular failure is outrageous because Orange County is a heavily conservative-libertarian/GOP area. It is safe to assume that those voters, not having a choice of deciding on GOP candidates, will choose to vote for the weaker Democratic candidates. All the arguments against open primaries were forced upon GOP voters in Orange County - to the detriment of Democratic voters.
If this machine failure was indeed intentional there is a possible secondary motivation for choosing this specific county: suppose Orange County GOP voters - who are famously libertarian - revolted against the christian fundamentalist party? I keep hearing testimonials from OC about "disenchanted Republicans" upset about The War, The Deficit and The Economy. It is possible that, had they been allowed to vote in the primary, record numbers would have chosen a write-in for the office of president.
If the allegations pan out we need to demand a criminal investigation by the CA-AG.
