I thought I might spice things up a bit by throwing a fairly radical topic out here for discussion: a new "secession" plan.
My thesis is as follows: The great debate about the "Culture Wars" and the Red and Blue States has led me to wonder whether we might need a "new secessionist" movement. By this I mean that maybe we should accept the fact that there are large numbers of people out there who want -- for example -- 1) to have prayer in the schools, 2) to limit abortion rights, 3) to oppose gay rights, 4) to eviscerate the social safety net, 5) support the Iraq war effort, etc.
These "Red Staters," who presumably are OK with Bush as President, would form their own "union" --perhaps in a confederation of sorts with the "Blue Staters," or perhaps truly separate. In this latter scenario, the Red and the Blue would have some relationship, perhaps akin to the current one we have with Canada or Mexico, replete with a Free Trade Agreement and other rules of engagement. This new arrangement would recognize that some of our differences are just too profound for us to ignore and that it may offer the opportunity to turn down the animus that has grown up between the two sides.
I told you it was a radical topic! Thoughts?
