From
Al Jazeera who has reporters on the ground:
Iraqi fighters have ambushed a US patrol in Abu Ghuraib area, west of Baghdad killing at least nine people, reported our correspondent.
Fighters also seized control of the highway linking the predominantly Sunni Muslim town with the besieged city of Falluja, west of Baghdad.
Hundreds of fighters armed with rocket-propelled grenades and Kalashnikov assault rifles were running along the highway, an AFP correspondent said.
An AFP photographer reported earlier that fierce clashes pitted US occupation troops against fighters in Abu Gharib.
And, what's jup in Falluja? There are reports of cease fire from
CNN, but then we see this, again from
Al Jazeera reporters on the ground :
"As of noon today coalition forces have initiated a unilateral suspension of offensive operations in Falluja," Paul Bremer told reporters on Friday.
But, the US-led occupation's deputy director of operations, Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt, denied the reports of a ceasefire.
Minutes after Bremer's announcement, US forces carried out a fresh offensive on Falluja bombing the town from the air. Scores of residents were injured in the attack, reported our correspondent.
The BBC is also citing "confusion" over cease fire in Falluja:
The suspension of hostilities was declared in an effort to open talks with local insurgents.
The move came on the fifth day of a battle for control of the Sunni town that has left up to 300 Iraqis dead.
A US commander on the ground said fighting had resumed after talks fell through, but a US general said the suspension was still in place.
