I just saw F9/11 in Toronto last night. Needless to say, it's a hot ticket. Every single seat in the theatre was taken, and despite having got there forty minutes early, I was forced to sit in the fourth row. The showings before and after my viewings were both sold out, and I have confirmations of several other total sell-outs on Friday and Saturday nights. Clearly, a massive success in Canada on the first weekend.
I have to say, though, I was a bit disappointed in the movie. I loathe Chimp as much as the next sane person, but I found that Moore's arguments and evidence didn't compel me in many places (this despite the fact that I know these arguments off by heart). The Saudi bit was pretty incoherent, and frankly, seemed a bit offensive in places. I felt a lot of the arguments, like the absurdity of the terror alert colour scheme, could have been a lot more devastating. The Daily Show bit from a little while back showing Cheney caught lying through his teeth is still the most effective single piece of anti-Bush footage I've seen.
That being said, it was still a generally strong and worthwhile film-the Iraqi footage was powerful, the "poor fighting the poor" was a sharp and well argued point, the final four minutes were an expert wrap-up and that final Bushism before the credits rolled was unintentional comic genius that will have me chuckling idioticly to myself for weeks to come.
I guess I suffered from the effects of high expectations. Here's hoping Republicans and independents won't feel the same way.
