I don't know how much play the Daschle/Thune campaign is getting outside of South Dakota, but here it dominates the editorial pages daily. You'd be surprised at how divided this small state is over Daschle. East of the Missouri River is slightly Democratic (Sioux Falls is East) but out West (Rapid City), you can't even track down the local Democratic Party without calling someone in Sioux Falls who then gives you a home phone # for the only Democrat they can find. I know Daschle has tons of money, but the ads won't really make too much of a difference here with such a dichotomous state. Daschle has trouble relating with the West River mentality of Wild Bill Hickock. You can't even mention McGovern's name in anything above a whisper. The Native American vote goes for Democrats, but there are some local Republican organizations that are making inroads in Indian Country. Thune comes across as a moderate Republican and there's nothing horrible that he's done to criticize him for. Hopefully, some positive attention will come Daschle's way before November. The best thing he's done recently is to help get the prairie dog off the endangered species list (prairie dogs destroy grassland which starves cattle which starves ranchers and farmers) and even then, that was called an election year ploy by the local conservatives. Hopefully, help is on the way for Tom.
