For those of you who didn't see the Daily Show, Steven Colbert did a bit on the unbelievable gaul of the Republican convention. When you combine it with the Swift Boat attacks and Denny Hasterts slander of George Soros, their theme amounts to: "FUCK YOU, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?"
They can slander, smear, slime, lie, manipulate, abuse 9/11 for politics, and then rub it in our noses because they know the media won't call them on it, they know their surrogates can do it with a straight face and they know we don't have the lack of conscience necessary to fight back equally.
I say, we take a page out of their book.
Below the jump is my, "F YOU WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT" suggestion.
I suggest that our surrogates go on TV tomorrow and Friday and repeat the following over and over:
George Bush abandoned the war on terror (by not finishing the job on bin Laden and then declaring it unwinnable) because he "may" be being blackmailed by Middle East drug pushers who supplied him with coke during the 70s.
Then, when a reporter incredulously asks whether our surrogate is suggesting that Bush did coke and is being blackmailed for it into going soft on bin Laden, we can say, "I don't know -- the facts should come out on whether this is true. What we know is that he refused to show up for a drug test, won't talk about what happened, and now is doing things that help Afghan drug lords. The media ought to work to find out the truth..."
If we say it over and over, maybe even run an ad (using the word "may" explain why he's abandoned the hunt for bin Laden and given up the war on terror) the Republicans will have a choice. Either let our ad go unrefuted, in which case the swing voters will maybe have doubts about Bush OR they will respond and we'll get three weeks of stories about whether Bush's past drug use is crippling his ability to prosecute the war on terror. Either way we win.
Now I'm not seriously suggesting we do this, but we need to find ways to fight the way they do. And besides, the other side would do this.
