Is the the Republican party line to avoid public debate whenever possible?
I think the president and the majority whip are both afraid to look real people in the eye when they try to defend their records. And they are supposed to be "leaders".
Here is yet another person's opinion on Roy Blunt's attempts to avoid an open public debate of the issues while he claims just the opposite from the safe harbor of a press release.

ROY BLUNT:
Why are debates so difficult?
Roy Blunt has displayed his arrogance again by refusing to acknowledge he has an opponent in this election.
Jim Newberry has called his office many times to make an invitation to debate and he has refused to speak to him.
Only after pressure from the media does he condescend to appear at a closed- to-the-public press conference.
Why, as an elected representative, who credits himself for legislation serving his constituency daily in the newspaper, can he be so reluctant to stand by his claims in a public debate?
