In an effort to fight the Marriage Protection Amendment, I got myself on the mailing list from the American Family Association. They were leading a number of efforts to contact representatives etc. etc. and I wanted to match their comments with my own.
Well, its been a continuing source of amusement as I get an email every week with a fresh "outrage" and a new call to action.
This week, they're calling for a boycott of Procter & Gamble because of their support for "the Homosexual Agenda" and this seemed like a great stage to mount a response.
A confession, its not like me to call for support of a large multi-national. I avoid WalMart, I support my small local hardware and bicycle stores even when I could save some money at a big chain. However, AFA has made a really convincing case about how progressive P&G is and how much they deserve our support. According to the AFA, P&G
- Supports pro-homosexual media with advertising
- Dropped advertising from Dr. Laura
- Is a major sponsor of Cincinnati Pride
- Supports Citizens to Restore Fairness
- Supports an employee group for Gay, Bisexual and Lesbian employees. GABLE
- Offers domestic partnership benefits
- Sponsors the "Out & Equal Workplace Advocates" summits
- Named a top 20 employer by PlanetOut
- Earned a 86% Corporate Equality Index from the Human Rights Campaign
Like I said, I don't normally offer a lot of support to multi-nationals but right is right and I want to live in a world where companies are rewarded for good-stewardship and supporting equal rights.
AFA is calling for members to take 5 steps. These steps are:
(1) Boycott three products of P&G -- Crest toothpaste, Tide detergent, and Pampers diapers. (Make sure your replacement is not a P&G product.)
(2) Call Chairman A.G. Lafley at 513-983-1100 and politely let him know that you are participating in the boycott and will ask others to do the same.
(3) Please register your support for the boycott in the form above.
(4) Please forward this to your friends and family.
(5) Print out this page and distribute at Sunday School, church, etc.
Lets do our best to counter these actions with our own. This morning, I am calling Mr. Lafley to let him know I support his company's pursuits of equality and I encourage all of you to do so as well.
