You have to give him credit for persistence. After all the
twists and turns of the past two years, Chalabi has triumphed and won all that he really covets - the Iraqi treasury and absolute control over Iraqi oil.
As of yesterday, Chalabi is now Deputy Prime Minister and (acting) Minister for Oil. His newphew is Finance Minister.
Chalabi has 23 convictions for bank fraud and embezzlement. He has also been investigated for spying for Iran, counterfeiting, and defrauding the treasury during the Iraqi currency exchange.
I feel sorry for the Iraqi people. However awful Saddam was, he provided free healthcare and education to Iraqis. They will get nothing with Ahmad siphoning all the money out of the country and into his offshore bank accounts (and probably those of his many friends and backers in Washington).
Chalabi has won. Iraqis have lost. America has wasted 300+ billion dollars to leave a poor country much worse off than before. And after Chalabi's appointment, there cannot be any hope of it ever getting better.
Sucks.
