Of all the so-called "bad words", why is shit among them anymore?

Just like those in the scientific community who want to downgrade Pluto from its current status as a planet, I submit to you all, my fellow Americans, that we remove the stigma and the shame associated with the S-word.
George Carlin mused that there are no bad words. There are bad thoughts, bad intentions, but no bad words.
This whole brouhaha over Novak (who is a prick, I'll grant you that) saying a naughty word on a boring news show is much ado about nothing. What, kids might be watching? About as likely as Rove going on Al Franken's show to confess everything.
Think about this logically. We hear the word "crap" all the time. It's synonymous with "shit". they're pretty much interchangeable. If you can say crap on Television, why not shit?
What is so special about these four letters arranged in that particular way that gets people so riled up?
Therefore, I call for an acceptance of the S-word into our lexicon of "good words". Now, who in our hallowed congressional halls do I have to bribe... er, I mean, write to in order to get this done?
