An article in the Washington Times describes the USAF Space Command's plan for its future presence in space. It mentions that the U.S. has already launched an electronic warfare "unit." The director of Space Command denies that more physical anti-satellite methods are in the works, but says Russia has already deployed both anti-satellite weapons and EW satellites and China is rapidly developing both.
More below the fold...
First of all, the director of Space Command is
General Lance Lord. That's straight out of a Jerry Bruckheimer movie and frankly, it's a name more suited to a porn star than a real live person.
Here's an interview with the vice-commander of Space Command. It's got a pretty dope picture of Boeing's Kinetic Energy Anti-Satellite (think space cannon) under development. General Leaf says his department isn't getting enough funding from the Pentagon. This source claims we dropped $350M on the Boeing project alone during the 1990s. Leaf is "disappointed" that some critics think classified funding is hiding offensive space projects.
A link from Jane's notable for its mention of a Chinese "piggy-back" ASW. It would attach itself to an enemy satellite like a leech and disrupt or destroy it.
A decent overview, but 3 years old. A mention of Kucinich's failed bill to ban weaponizing space.
Not just the Russians and Chinese are developing space weapons. The Indian AF is also establishing a "sub-command" to manage their space capability. Some Indian officers trained by the USAF Space Command are helping to start it.
Partially a followup to an earlier diary of mine: USAF Wants to Build Death Star.
