I think that Bush and Kerry will have to address the issue of the overall size of the US military force, and in light of the reality on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan, they will have to take a position on THE DRAFT.
I haven't seen any opinions on this posted here, but I think this is the kind of hot potato that will have to be caught. Maybe it is time for the candidates to put on mitts.
Or, if the draft is ruled out by one or the other candidate, then there will have to be some plan as to how to accomplish the yet-to-be-defined long term goals in Iraq and Afghanistan pretty darn soon. Since there isn't much international support to put troops on the ground, the temporary solution is to hire these "contractors" who, as was pointed out in a diary earlier, represent the second-largest contingent in the coalition.
