Truly, a triumph for justice. Only two current Red States have passed a gay rights bill--Nevada and New Mexico. When New Hampshire passed its gay rights bill, it was a Red State, but since has become blue.
The House voted 65-51 on the measure, which was approved Monday by the Senate. Gov. Rod Blagojevich has said he supports it.
The action came on the last possible day; the bill would have died had it not been approved before the new Legislature is sworn in Wednesday.
The proposal would add "sexual orientation" to the state law that protects people from bias based on race, religion and similar traits. It applies to discrimination in jobs, housing, public accommodations or credit.
Opponents argued it would lead to approval of gay marriage in Illinois and allow cross-dressers to use rest rooms of the opposite sex.
