I wrote this letter to my congressman, Brad Miller, because I think it's time that we let the people who "represent" us know how we feel. They are in Washington as "representatives" of the people who elected them and they should vote/act as we feel.
Dear Congressman Brad Miller,
When John Kerry spoke at the depot in Greensboro, I had the privilege of hearing you speak for the first time. I must say that I was very impressed. I remember thinking "now here is a man who will represent the democrats of Greensboro". When someone from your campaign came knocking on my door to get me to vote for you, I'm sure they were pleased to find someone who was not only planning to vote for you, but also very eager to have a sign to put in the front yard. When Richard Burr won the Senate seat I was upset since I knew that North Carolina democrats wouldn't have any representation in the Senate. However, I was still proud to know that you would be representing us in the House.
Unfortunately I was wrong. Last week you did two things that made me change my mind about you.
First, when an objection to the electoral votes of Ohio was voted on, you voted against upholding the objection. Since you have been in Washington maybe you have forgotten how important the vote is to the American people. Think back throughout our history and remember all the people who have died for the right to vote in this country. When there is ONE vote that is not counted in this country, or there is any doubt to the validity of an election, then all those people died in vain. Some Senators are working to make the elections fair, such as having machines with a paper trail. I suggest you work with them or lend them your support.
Second, Congressman Howard Coble was quoted by the Greensboro News & Record as saying that "troop withdrawal ought to be an option. It ought to be placed on the table for consideration". I agree with him. It should have been on the table long ago. There should have been planning already in place in case this was needed. Unfortunately, you disagreed. The article in the paper also said "Coble said he has noticed a shift among his constituents in the 6th Congressional District regarding their feelings about the war." If his constituents have shifted, don't you think it's possible that yours have, too? Since you represent us, you should be agreeing with Coble. Let me say it loud and clear so you'll know next time how your supporters feel. GET OUR TROOPS OUT OF IRAQ!
I was very proud to have your sign in my yard and very proud to vote for you in the past election. I hope you enjoy your time in Washington. If you continue to not represent the people of this area, I can guarantee that this will be your last term. We need true representatives in Congress, not just someone to keep a seat warm and vote with the majority.
Sincerely,
Kristin Isler
