Dear Diary:
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen's SALSA just passed the Senate with 89 ayes and 4 nays (7 members not voting). Now we are going to impose trade sanctions on Syria and clash yet again with the European Union, which declared a few weeks ago that it won't respect the sanctions. Of course, Bremer will close the border to trade with Iraq leading to more economic distress there. This will doubtlessly embarrass Turkey, too.
I don't understand how this action is going to accomplish a damned thing. Maybe there is a future time and place for putting pressure on Syria to quit Lebanon and stop funding Hezbollah in the context of a comprehensive Middle East peace plan. But now??
