It may be good strategy for the Democrats to be so quiet and meek these days, watching the Bush Administration implode.
Or it may be bad strategy.
Because conservative Republicans (and perhaps NEO-conservative ones, as well) are
NOT keeping their mouths shut.
AND THEY MAY JUST STEAL THE THUNDER if our Democratic representatives don't wake up and start acting like the opposition.
Example?
Charles Krauthammer in today's Washington Post in an article entitled Withdraw This Nominee.
This Strangelovian fellow gives me the absolute creeps and he is stealing the message folks.
He's stealing the message and he is doing it in simple, easily digestible bites.
There are 1,084,504 lawyers in the United States. What distinguishes Harriet Miers from any of them, other than her connection with the president? To have selected her, when conservative jurisprudence has J. Harvie Wilkinson, Michael Luttig, Michael McConnell and at least a dozen others on a bench deeper than that of the New York Yankees, is scandalous.
It will be argued that this criticism is elitist. But this is not about the Ivy League. The issue is not the venue of Miers's constitutional scholarship, experience and engagement. The issue is their nonexistence.
Poisoning the well while the Democrats stand by, idly, twiddling their thumbs and waiting for Washington to burn down.
