I was watching Faux's "Hannity and Colmes" variety show, recently, and a story emerged concerning racial conflict. But, instead of Rush Limbaugh ranting over Donovan McNabb, The People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has launched an initiative which compares beef and poultry slaughterhouses to enslaved African-Americans.
The Animal Liberation Movement is making waves online and offline. Whoever is over this campaign is clueless and confused. Why in the heck would PETA compare African-American enslaved to animals? Does anyone remember when
ABC sports announcer Howard Cosell compared blacks to "monkeys"? I guess PETA is doing the equivalent with this pose:
But, this quote, from Orlando Sentinel sums up the situation at best:
"Animal rights is a good cause, but get it out there straight up. Do not exploit us to get your issue out there,'' said Scot X. Esdiale, president of the NAACP's Connecticut branch. "We were used like animals to build this country for free; the comparison of black rights with animal rights is not a good one.''
Skewed, PETA is, for remember the fallout from Bambi? PETA even ran an effort to save the deer. Now, the deer population is exceeding carrying capacity.
Now, I concede, if the species were on the brink of extinction such as the American Bald Eagle, we must protect that certain species. However, PETA should not compare members of a particular race to cattle in order to prove their point. That's the same thing as abandoning a race and class of people who live in mediocre conditions to fend for themselves in order for FEMA to prove to Americans that they are an unorganized organization full of red tape, and makes Americans ask, "What's the beef, and where's the pork?"
