What signficance does Italian intelligence AND Niger have in common to the Iraqi nuclear program in both 1981 AND 2003? A post in www.isittreason.com caught my attention when I read it earlier today. Now that I have a few moments, I decided I had to post the story. With the Fitzgerald investigation wrapping up, I figured we could all use a refresher course.
As we all know, Judy Miller was the lead reporter pushing Neo-Conservative views about Iraq. It turns out she has a long history in this role.
On June 9, 1981, Judy Miller was the lead reporter covering the Iraq Nuclear Program. What does a TWENTY FOUR YEAR OLD story have in common with today?
From the New York Times Via www.isittreason.com:
"One official said that Iraq had also purchased large quantities of uranium ore from Portugal and Niger, and that, in negotiations with Portugal, it had threatened to cut off oil shipments unless uranium ore was supplied." New York Times June 9, 1981.

The Iraq Nuclear program in 1981 was being aided by Italian intelligence operatives and made use of uranium and nuclear supplies made available by Niger.
We know for certain that in the 1980s Iraq had a verifiable nuclear program made most evident by the presense of nuclear facilities within the country. The Iraqi nuclear program circa 1981 was facilitated by two groups central to the forged documents of 2003.
Italian intelligence operatives and made use of uranium and nuclear supplies made available by Niger.
We should not be surprised that the same story popped up in 2003 as it did in 1981. The difference between the two, you ask? In 1981, the documents were real and the program existed. In 2003, the documents were fake and the nuclear program was a figment of NeoCon imagination. We should not be surprised, but we should be afraid.
That's my short take on the events: I hate to plug Timeselect, but if you have it you can check out the article from 1981.

I know they posted a more nuanced take earlier today.
