A Texas court issued an arrest warrant for Republican Tom DeLay on money laundering and conspiracy charges. But what was initially expected to be just a routine step took a surprising turn for the dramatic.
At the time of his arrest in Texas DeLay appeared unkempt and disheveled, but he remained defiant as he carried a copy of the Bible, the holy scripture of his Christian faith.
When asked his name, DeLay refused to answer directly, instead adamantly insisting he was "The Rightful and Lawful Leader of the United States House Majority."
Then DeLay shouted, "Those who try to overthrow me are unlawful aggressors who do not follow God's will or God's law. God will punish these infidels, of that you can be certain!"
A stunned silence ensued, though the booking procedure ended calmly when DeLay posted bail and was released.
As he walked away DeLay rolled his eyes and was overheard saying under his breath, "It's not like I leaked a CIA operative's name or anything. Geez, people, let's keep some fucking perspective."
DeLay's attorneys are expected to try to postpone any hearings or trials until after Patrick Fitzgerald's anticipated indictments. An associate of the lead attorney speaking under condition of anonymity was asked about this strategy.
"DeLay figures he's gonna have to be somebody's bitch in prison. After what he did with redistricting in Texas, he'd quite simply rather share a cell with Cheney or Libby than some big Black Texas Democrat."
