So, I decided to do a followup to
http://www.dailykos.com/....
HR550, the Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act, now has 205 cosponsors in the House. This is the best currently available bill for getting voter-verified paper ballots across the country. If it gets 218 cosponsors, it can be forced out of committee (and will immediately pass the House, because 218 is a majority). That's a deficit of 13.
(Here's Rush Holt's page to petition the House Administration committee to let it come to a vote immediately; this also notes some of the bill's virtues. Diary EDITED because I'm so hip-deep in this issue that I forgot to mention what HR550 was. Thanks commentators.)
Now, this might be accomplished with additional Republican cosponsors (there are quite a few Republican cosponsors), but I haven't managed to put together the full list of non-cosponsoring Republicans, because it's quite long. See http://thomas.loc.gov/...
for the up-to-date list of cosponsors.
We really should be able to get the rest of the Democrats, though, and that would be enough. Here are the remaining Democratic House members who are not cosponsors. There are 18 of them.
Joe Baca CA-43
Dan Boren OK-2
James Clyburn SC-6
Jim Costa CA-20
Jerry Costello IL-12
Henry Cuellar TX-28
Stephanie Herseth SD
Ruben Hinojosa TX-15
Steny Hoyer MD-5
James Langevin RI-2
John Larson CT-1
Zoe Lofgren CA-16
Juanita Millender-McDonald CA-37
Collin Peterson MN-7
Earl Pomeroy ND
Ike Skelton MO-4
John Tanner TN-8
Melvin Watt NC-12
Zoe Lofgren is a particular surprise, since she's usually very good about this sort of thing.
Anyway, if one of these folks, or one of the Republicans who hasn't cosponsored HR 550, is your Representative, consider giving them a call or email or whatever.
Second UPDATE: One of the really weird, unfortunate things is that this bill does not have an matching companion bill in the Senate. There's no reason this should be the case. So if you want to do something else, or your Representative is on board, you can contact your Senators and ask them to introduce one.
