All right. I'm officially calling out every elected Democrat from Congressional leaders and governors to postmasters and dogcatchers: it's time to stand up and fight the Miers appointment. I intend to make this a "litmus test" for my own continued involvement as a registered Democrat. I'm asking every Kossack who agrees to sign on, and start turning up the heat on every elected official they can think of.
More below.
I'm not going to go into the thousand and one reasons why Harriet Miers, nice lady that she undoubtedly is, is a horrendously bad choice for the USSC. She has absolutely no credentials that should appeal to anyone who isn't a Bush fluffer; there is absolutely no reason why any Democrat with a progressive bone in his/her body should stand up behind her. She's nothing more than a Bush consigliore getting a payoff.
The Dems need to fight this nomination tooth and nail, not just because of the nature of the nominee, but because it's way past time for Democrats to stand up, draw a line in the sand, and say, "NO MORE." This is a perfect opportunity to oppose Bush inflicting another crony on the American people -- this time not just for a few years, but for a generation. It's time to serve notice that we will not be slapped around and ground into the dirt any more.
I'll be pressuring the Backbone Campaign, Bob Fertik at Democrats.com, and others, to join in urging the Democratic party to unify in opposing Miers.
If the Dems refuse to mount a concerted effort to stop Miers, I will officially leave the Democratic party. No more donations, no more party activism, no more passing out flyers for corporate weasel candidates. No more nothing. I will find another party, or FOUND another party, that reflects both the views I hold and the fighting spirit I demand from my party.
This far and no further.
